During the 18th century the Bulgarian National Renaissance begins. The period distinguishes with its radical changes in all fields of the cultural, political and social – economic life and is not accidentally called the Bulgarian Renaissance. In the pre-renaissance period, separate woodcarving and painting schools emerged as well as crafts which during the 18-19 century were really prosperous.
In the town of Gabrovo the resourcefulness of the quick-witted, masters finds its way in many crafts. They skillfully use the geographical location of the town- next to the Shipka pass and the available natural resources: the power of water and wood from the forests in order to build workshops for the development of the crafts.
